Khaled Takreti
Syrian - French visual artist
Khaled Takreti (Beirut, 1964) is a Syrian-French visual artist regarded as one of the most authoritative figures in contemporary Middle Eastern art. Initially trained as an architect at the University of Damascus, he developed from the 1990s onward a distinctive and highly recognizable pictorial practice capable of combining pop aesthetics, psychological introspection, and social critique. After living between Beirut, Damascus, and New York, he settled permanently in Paris in 2004, where he further deepened his artistic path by studying printmaking at the Atelier des Beaux-Arts and later comic art at the Académie des Arts in Brussels.
Considered one of the pioneers of contemporary pop painting in the Arab world, Takreti introduced into Syria an innovative figurative language characterized by large-scale compositions focused on the human figure, strong narrative construction, and an intense use of color. His works merge autobiographical elements, familial references, and reflections on contemporary social models, while also addressing the human and cultural consequences of the Syrian war. Through a painting practice that combines personal memory with a universal dimension, the artist investigates identity, relationships, loss, and the transformations of contemporary society.
Throughout his career, he has presented major solo and group exhibitions across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the United States, participating in international events such as the Alexandria Biennale, Art Paris, Art Hong Kong, and Art Dubai. His works are held in prestigious public and museum collections, including the Syrian National Museum in Damascus, the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts in Amman, the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, and the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris.
His artistic research, developed through painting, drawing, and visual narrative, has influenced a new generation of contemporary Arab artists. In 2012, he was also included by Art Absolument among the 101 greatest living artists working in France, a recognition that further consolidated his international profile.
