Taravat Talepasand
Iranian visual artist
Taravat Talepasand is an artist, activist, and educator whose labor-intensive interdisciplinary painting practice interrogates normative cultural behaviors within contemporary systems of power. Born in Iran and raised in the United States, Talepasand’s work is deeply informed by her experience as an Iranian-American woman, through which she explores the parallels and tensions between different cultural frameworks. Her practice critically examines gender, censorship, and political authority, often addressing forms of gender apartheid and the complexities of identity shaped by migration and diaspora. Central to her research is the notion of “subversive joy,” a strategy through which she challenges oppressive structures while reclaiming agency and visibility.
Working across painting, drawing, performance, and installation, Talepasand develops intricate visual narratives that merge personal history with broader socio-political realities. Her imagery frequently draws on both Western and Middle Eastern visual traditions, creating a layered dialogue that reflects both cultural hybridity and dissonance. Through this approach, she investigates how systems of control are internalized and reproduced, while also opening spaces for resistance and transformation
Talepasand has exhibited widely in the United States and internationally, and her work is held in several prominent public collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA), the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, the Orange County Museum of Art, the Portland Art Museum, and collections at Tufts University. Her exhibitions include In the Fields of Empty Days: The Intersection of Past and Present in Iranian Art at LACMA, the solo exhibition توارط | TARAVAT at YBCA and Macalester College, and participation in major group exhibitions such as Bay Area Now 8 at YBCA, the 2010 California Biennial, the 2024 Oregon Artists’ Biennial, and the 2026 Oregon Biennial.
In addition to her artistic practice, Talepasand has played a significant role in arts education. She previously served as Chair of the Painting Department at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI), where she also received the prestigious Richard Diebenkorn Teaching Fellowship in 2010. She is currently Assistant Professor of Art Practice at Portland State University, within the Schnitzer School of Art + Art History + Design. Alongside her academic work, she is the founder of Fans Only, a non-profit artist collective that supports collaborative and socially engaged artistic practices.
Talepasand earned her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 2001 and her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2006. She is the recipient of several awards, including the 2024 Creative Heights Grant. She currently lives and works in Oregon.
