Boushra Almutawakel

Yemeni photographer

Boushra Almutawakel (Sana’a, 1969) is widely regarded as the first female photographer from Yemen and one of the most authoritative voices in contemporary Middle Eastern photography. Her education spans Yemen, the United States, and Europe: after earning a BSBA in International Business from the American University in Washington, D.C., she completed a diploma in photography at the Portfolio Center in Atlanta, initiating a path that combines artistic vision with social engagement. Upon returning to Yemen in 1994, she initially worked as an educational advisor while continuing to develop her artistic practice and participate in group exhibitions. In 1996, she became a founding member of Al-Halaqa in Sana’a, an artists’ collective that later established an independent space dedicated to meetings, workshops, and exhibitions, contributing significantly to both local and international cultural dialogue.

Since 1998, she has worked as a full-time photographer, collaborating with major international organizations—including the United Nations, UNICEF, CARE International, and various cultural institutions—while consistently pursuing her own personal projects, often focused on social issues and female identity. Alongside her artistic activity, she has held institutional roles: she served as a cultural affairs consultant at the Yemeni Embassy in Washington, D.C. (2002–2003), where she coordinated major initiatives such as a symposium at the Smithsonian, and later worked at the Ministry of Human Rights in Sana’a (2005–2006), with a particular focus on women’s issues.

Her work has been exhibited internationally in leading museums and institutions. It is held in important permanent collections, including the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Barjeel Art Foundation, as well as in numerous private collections.

In 2012, she delivered one of the first TEDx talks ever held in Yemen, and in 2018 she was named by the BBC among the 100 most influential and inspiring women worldwide, confirming a career that bridges artistic research, civic engagement, and international recognition.

After teaching photography to women and children in Yemen and promoting educational and cultural initiatives, she now lives and works in Dubai, where she continues her artistic practice and has been part of Tashkeel, one of the leading contemporary art centers in the United Arab Emirates.
