Günay Mehdizade

Azerbaijani - Turkish painter

Günay Mehdizade Zebic (Baku, 1981) is an Azerbaijani visual artist active primarily in painting and sculpture, as well as a screenwriter, director, and set designer in the field of theatre. After an initial non-academic training, she studied painting and sculpture privately under the guidance of established artists, early developing an autonomous expressive language.

In 2011, she was admitted to the Azerbaijan Professional Artists Union, a recognition that consolidated her position within the national artistic landscape. In the same period, she was included in official national encyclopedic records, attesting to the relevance achieved by her artistic research.

Mehdizade’s artistic production is distinguished by the development of a personal language that interweaves tradition and contemporaneity. In particular, the artist has developed four main stylistic approaches: Modern Miniature, which reinterprets the Eastern miniature tradition in a contemporary key; Şəbəkə (Sebeke), inspired by the geometric decorative patterns of Azerbaijani art; Expressive Sebeke, characterized by greater gestural and chromatic intensity; and Miniature Realism, which combines figurative elements with the precision and synthesis typical of miniature painting. In parallel, she has also defined her own sculptural language.

Her works have been exhibited in numerous international contexts and are held in the permanent collections of museums and cultural institutions. Among these, the Portrait of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, preserved at the Atatürk House Museum, stands out as one of the most notable works in her production.

Alongside her visual art practice, Mehdizade is active in theatre as a playwright, director, and set designer, participating in productions presented in various international contexts. This interdisciplinary dimension expands the scope of her research, placing it in dialogue with performative and narrative languages.

In 2023, she held a solo exhibition at the Eskişehir City Museum, organized by the Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality, further confirming her presence within both the Azerbaijani and Turkish cultural contexts.

Throughout her career, she has received numerous awards, including the prize and medal of the solo exhibition “Independence” (2023), the Cultural Friendship Award granted by the Turkish Ministry of National Education, and first prize at the International Theatre Competition in Turkey (2019). Additional recognitions have been conferred by the Yunus Emre Cultural Center and by the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Milan, along with other notable awards in the artistic and cultural fields.
