Vita Buivid
Ukrainian - Russian visual artist
Vita Buivid is an Amsterdam-based artist, born in Dnipro, Ukraine, whose multidisciplinary practice spans photography, text, and research-driven visual work. Formed within the late Soviet and post-Soviet context, her work reflects a sustained engagement with memory, identity, and the relationship between personal histories and political realities.
After studying at Dnipro University, Vita Buivid moved to St. Petersburg, where she has been active in the contemporary art scene since the early 1990s. Through photography and photo-based media, she positioned herself among a generation of artists contributing to the redefinition of feminist perspectives in post-Soviet art. Since relocating to the Netherlands in 2018, she has continued to expand her practice internationally. She graduated from the Dutch Art Institute (ArtEZ University of the Arts) in 2020 and completed a residency at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in 2023.
Her work frequently draws on personal and archival material, translating fragments of lived experience into layered visual narratives. Projects such as How I Spent My Summer, nominated for the Kandinsky Prize, juxtapose images of leisure with the intrusion of military conflict, revealing the fragility of everyday life under the shadow of war. In Peonymania (2013), she engages with family history as a space of both intimacy and political resonance, unfolding concealed narratives through carefully constructed imagery.
Her broader practice addresses the relationship between the body and the state, with a particular focus on ageing, vulnerability, and systems of social control. Through a research-based approach, she examines how political structures inscribe themselves onto individual lives, especially those of women and ageing bodies.
Vita Buivid’s engagement with social and political themes has been recognised through nominations for the Kandinsky Prize (2009, 2017) and the Galatea Kunstprijs (2023). In 2000, she received a grant from the City of Paris to develop the project Paris. Red during a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts. In 2017, she participated in the parallel programme of the Venice Biennale.
Her works are held in major public and private collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma (Helsinki), the Museum of Fine Arts (New Mexico), the Dnipro Art Museum, the Harry Ransom Center (Austin), the RuArts Foundation, and the Van Gogh House Museum (Zundert), among others.
